Love 'em or Lose 'em written by Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans, is a really nice book on people management. It talks about simple things that managers can do to treat their employees as valuable human resources and to get out the best in people. And if you think about it, you don't really have to be a manager in a company to learn from this book. All of us play the role of managers in our lives - sometimes we manage our friends or spouses or children or even our boses. We can still bring out the best in the people we interact with on a daily basis by doing a few things conciously. Here is a summary of the different things listed in the book that can impact you in a manager role:
* Find out what is important to people and reward them with what they appreciate. Everyone is different.
* Support growth: Know their talents; Offer your perspective; Discuss Trends; Discover multiple options; Codesign an action plan.
* Show respect to them. Be a friend to them. Be supportive and flexible to their personal lives. Be a good listener.
* Enrish the job: Make it challenging by rotating responsibilities or adding new ones. Extend your trust to them.
* Encourage passion. Provide Recognition - praise what you want to see more of, ignore what you wish to discourage.
* Mentor them. Identify opportunities for them. Be truthful about their strengths and the things that they can improve on. Give and get feedback. There may be things you could do better.
* Define company values and set alignment with the employee's values. Link them to the world outside of theirs.
* Have fun on the job. Encourage and practice a sense of humor. Encourage work life balance.
* Remember you have a big responsibility in retaining talent.
