The power of soul

This book, written by Dr. Zhi Gang Sha is mostly about the soul, body and mind. Nothing struck out in the book to me, except for this part around Leadership and Management in which he states: Every business needs leadership. The leader must have the vision and ability to create and manifest the mission of the business. A great leader must be able to do the following: present a clear vision and a direction in which to move the company have great abilities to plan, market and control create efficient and effective business operations delegate responsibilities to others offer great love, care and compassion to all employees gather employees' hearts and motivate team effort be client and customer-oriented be sensitive to mistakes and act quickly to correct them implement great systems for rewarding good work and preventing mistakes  This was a great leadership tip in a book of souls. I liked it so much, I thought I'd pass this info on to anyone interested in management.

Peaceful Warrior

A great movie on how sportsmen can accomplish the 'impossible' by staying in the moment. In the movie, an old wise guy helps a gymnast recover from 'never being able to walk again' to competing in the olympics. Some of the great life-impacting quotes from the movie are: "It's not the destination. It's the journey tha matters".

Invictus

A movie on how Nelson Mandela rules a country by touching the hearts of millions. The movie has some really great quotes on living life. In the movie he helps a losing rugby team make it's way to the world cup defeating 'undeafeatable' teams. Invictus means unconquerable. The words of the poem that Mandela keeps repeating to himself are: "I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul."

Love 'em or Lose 'em Book review

Love 'em or Lose 'em written by Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans, is a really nice book on people management. It talks about simple things that managers can do to treat their employees as valuable human resources and to get out the best in people. And if you think about it, you don't really have to be a manager in a company to learn from this book. All of us play the role of managers in our lives - sometimes we manage our friends or spouses or children or even our boses. We can still bring out the best in the people we interact with on a daily basis by doing a few things conciously.  Here is a summary of the different things listed in the book that can impact you in a manager role: * Find out what is important to people and reward them with what they appreciate. Everyone is different. * Support growth: Know their talents; Offer your perspective; Discuss Trends; Discover multiple options; Codesign an action plan. * Show respect to them. Be a friend to them. Be supportive and flexible to their personal lives. Be a good listener.  * Enrish the job: Make it challenging by rotating responsibilities or adding new ones. Extend your trust to them. * Encourage passion. Provide Recognition - praise what you want to see more of, ignore what you wish to discourage. * Mentor them. Identify opportunities for them. Be truthful about their strengths and the things that they can improve on. Give and get feedback. There may be things you could do better. * Define company values and set alignment with the employee's values. Link them to the world outside of theirs.  * Have fun on the job. Encourage and practice a sense of humor. Encourage work life balance. * Remember you have a big responsibility in retaining talent. Some of the top reasons why employees stay, as listed in the book are: Exciting work and challenge; career growth and learning, working with great people, supportive management, bing recognized and respected, pay/benefits, great work culture, autonomy - sense of creativity and control, flexibility, fun on the team, responsibility, loyalty to the organization, inspiring leadership.  The book lists great real-life examples. To get a deeper understanding of the above principles, do take some time and skim through the book.
